Thai basil, native to Southeast Asia, has a slightly anise- and licorice-like and slightly spicy flavor that is more stable under high or extended cooking temperatures than that of sweet basil. It  basil has small, narrow leaves, purple stems, and pink-purple flowers. Like other varieties of basil, it is a heat-loving plant that likes sunshine, but it will tolerate partial shade.
