Hansberry Garden’s solar-powered outdoor amphitheater, built primarily from materials recovered from the site, features seating tiers of Wissahickon schist. The stone tiers are filled with pea gravel and seat about 45 audience members; an additional 15 or 20 people can fit in the area behind the tiers and on the grass at the foot of the stage. Audience members are welcome to bring blankets or stadium seats. A paved path makes a few seats at the top of the theater accessible to wheelchairs.
The theater was completed in 2019 and in 2024 was dedicated to the late Dr. Edward Chun, a loyal friend of the garden and longtime member of the Senior Environment Corps. The pergola that serves as the stage was built with assistance from the Weavers Way Environment Committee. Solar panels on the pergola’s roof and related equipment were donated by renewable-energy evangelist Rob Smith. Jefferson University architecture professor Martha Añez designed the theater, and construction was done by contractor Ramon Toledo.
